CULTURE IN THE COMMUNITY!

Native Heritage Month, in partnership with the Anchorage School District, sends artists, elders, and professionals into the community and classrooms throughout the city of Anchorage. Armed with lesson plans and inspirational talks, Alaska Natives reach out to share their craft and experience with children and adults alike. This year’s Culture in the Community is the largest yet!

DISCUSSION: ALASKAN NATIVE LAW FEDERAL AND STATE JUDICIAL RULINGS.

Many events are planned this year in celebration of 50 years of Alaska statehood. To better understand the legal aspect of statehood, renowned Alaskan attorneys David S. Case, Ethan Schutt, and John Sky Starkey come together to discuss various judicial rulings and their implications regarding Alaska Natives, Alaskans and Alaska. KUSKOKWIM EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION AUCTION
The Kuskokwim Corporation: 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
This Native arts and crafts silent auction will be held at the offices of The Kuskokwim Corporation at 4300 B Street, Suite 207, Anchorage, Alaska 99503. The event is FREE and all proceeds benefit the Kuskokwim Educational Foundation. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served and the auction is from 5:30 – 7:00pm. 6th ANNUAL INTERTRIBAL GATHERING
Alaska Native Heritage Center
In the tradition of the Pow wow, indigenous storytellers, dancers, drummers and performers gather to perform works from their cultures. Come see The Living Traditions Dance Troupe- comprised of various championship artists, each bringing his/her own cultural values and ideals, and expressing them through dance movements. The Group involves a variety of dancers, including but not limited to representatives from the following tribes: Hopi, Dine', Lakota, Seminole, Creek, Hidatsa, Apache and Choctaw. Groups from Hawaii and Alaska will also be performing.

FILM - THE INVISIBLE NATION
Anchorage Museum at Rasmussen Center: 6:00 pm

The third movie highlighting Heritage Month at the Anchorage Museum’s series Movies for Your Mind is a Canadian documentary in French with English subtitles. The film is directed by Richard Desjardins and Robert Monderie. The Invisible Nation challenges perceptions by spotlighting the sad reality of the Algonquin of Quebec and bringing the history of this people to the screen for the first time.
$4 for members, $5 for non-member seniors and $6 general admission

A DISCUSSION: “ALASKA NATIVES MOVING TO ANCHORAGE”
Join Willie Hensley, Native activist and author of the forthcoming book "Fifty Miles for Tomorrow", Doreen Brown, Anchorage School District's Native Education Director and others for a discussion on the movement of Alaska Natives from villages to an urban community.
