Alaska Native Home Base Video Project

The Alaska Native Home Base Video Project is a special project funded by the Department of Education to the Central Council Tlingit and Haida Head Start. These videos are created for parents and caregivers of young children and designed for use in facilitated group settings and for in-home use with an early childhood specialist. In addition, all programs will be able to be viewed and enjoyed around Alaska on various broadcast channels. A curriculum of activities is also available for viewers to extend the ideas and issues brought up in each tape.

These unique videos are designed to:

  • Provide very important information about how parents can help support healthy development of their children and provide a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their children.
  • Support Tlingit and Haida parents by looking at the richness of their heritage, the parenting traditions they have inherited, and the connection Native parents have with elders and other parents.
  • Not just "tell" but also "show" appropriate behavior and parenting strategies.
  • Support parents to accept the pains of the past and learn from the hardship of their ancestors in order to create a healthy future while provoking parents to further explore the issues addressed.
  • Support parents to find alternative to child abuse and neglect through connections with traditional values and current research.
