There is a Fetal
Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) diagnostic team in Juneau, Alaska.
The Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska
is the lead agency of which over 25 agencies and individuals have
collaborated to write grants to address the needs of individuals
who experience FASD and their families.
Without early
and appropriate identification, screening, diagnosis and service,
individuals affected by prenatal exposure to alcohol are at greater
risk of developing secondary disabilities and for experiencing ongoing
difficulty with health, development, behavior, school, social skills,
jobs and independent living. Research has shown that an early diagnosis
(before the age of 6) is a key protective factor that can improve
outcomes for the individual including minimizing the development
of secondary disabilities.
In
2003, the team went to the University of Washington and obtained
training in using the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Diagnosis and Prevention
Network (FAS DPN) 4-Digit Diagnostic Code. Team members include
Dr. Amy Dressel, Doloresa Cadiente, Doug Wesson, Dr. Jana Linfield,
Janna Smith, Justine Muench, Shirley Jones, Laura Rorem, Cameron
Young, Dr. Susan Hunter-Joerns, Rachel Sanders, John Pond, Cindy
Westergaard, Jackie Forster and Richard Nault.
