Rural Community Social Services/Budget Request Unit

Program Purpose
To protect children and ensure their safety by working to resolve child abuse, neglect, and sexual assault in the rural communities
of Southeast Alaska.

Program Description
The program reduces geographic isolation through placement of on-site social work staff who can provide regular, on-going prevention and early intervention services. Program staff are knowledgeable and experienced in the life and cultures of the Tlingit and Haida people. In addition, the program promotes communication and cooperation between non-Native and rural Alaska Native communities.

Accomplishments
The majority of services were in counseling, information, and referral. The balance of services were in areas such as financial assistance, housing, referral, and advocacy.

Goals
To assist communities with assessing and addressing their unique population needs through the placement of on-site social work staff; to intensify outreach in order to provide regular, on-going prevention and early intervention services; to reduce barriers to cooperation between the Central Council and the state; and to continue to explore multi-disciplinary objectives and interactions.

Funding Agency
The State of Alaska, Department of Health and Social Services provides funding for the program.
