William Andrews Appointed to the Board of Regents
as Student Regent

sdfnia Central Council Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska would like to congratulate tribal citizen and UAS PITAAS (Preparing Indigenous Teachers & Administrators for Alaska Schools) student William Andrews on his recent appointment by Governor Sarah Palin as Student Regent to the University of Alaska Board of Regents. He will serve a two year term.

“I am so happy for William on his appointment to the Board of Regents and for the Board that they will gain someone with William’s experience and interest,” said Representative Mary Nelson.  “The Governor has made an excellent choice.  William will be conscientious in learning the issues before the board, and will be a productive, contributing board member.”

Andrews is the son of William Andrews and Elaine Chilton. He is the grandchild of William S. and Marie Andrews, and Gene and Harriet Chilton. He was born in Juneau and raised in both the Juneau and Anchorage areas. His Tlingit name is Kichnaalx and he is Deishetaan of the Raven Moiety.

“While pursuing a college education, many opportunities become available to students,” Andrews said. “The opportunity to be considered for the UA Board of Regents would never have arisen if I was not pursuing a college education. It demonstrates how college is so much more than an institution of learning; it provides experiences that cultivate leadership skills. It is a testament to how important education should be to our people, as we pursue successful, independent lifestyles that enable us to compete in the professional community. More importantly, such opportunities empower us to participate in the decision making process, and offer a Native perspective on issues that have an impact on the Native community.”

Congratulations William!
