CENTRAL COUNCIL RECEIVES $294,590 BROADBAND GRANT FROM USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT
USDA Rural Development
- Rural Utility Service awarded a grant to the Central Council Tlingit
& Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (CCTHITA) to provide affordable broadband
internet access, use and services to the community of Angoon, Alaska.
Central Council's proposal identified the critical needs and the disparity
for rural communities in Alaska when it comes to reliable and affordable
Internet access.
"Our project
will provide broadband internet access and services to community residents
and businesses, provide a Community Center with computers and high speed
internet access; provide access for training and provide free use and
transmission of broadband internet to critical community facilities,"
said President Thomas.
Central Council's
partners in this project include the City of Angoon, the Angoon Community
Association, Angoon Fire and Police Department, numerous departments of
Central Council and Kootznoowoo, Inc.
The proposed technologies
will provide community-based high-speed bandwidth at levels as high as
1.544Mbs downlink/512Kbs uplink for distribution by the Tlingit &
Haida ISP. The Community Center site was generously donated by Kootznoowoo,
Inc.
