CENTRAL COUNCIL RECEIVES $294,590 BROADBAND GRANT FROM USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT

USDA Rural Development - Rural Utility Service awarded a grant to the Central Council Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (CCTHITA) to provide affordable broadband internet access, use and services to the community of Angoon, Alaska. Central Council's proposal identified the critical needs and the disparity for rural communities in Alaska when it comes to reliable and affordable Internet access.

"Our project will provide broadband internet access and services to community residents and businesses, provide a Community Center with computers and high speed internet access; provide access for training and provide free use and transmission of broadband internet to critical community facilities," said President Thomas.

Central Council's partners in this project include the City of Angoon, the Angoon Community Association, Angoon Fire and Police Department, numerous departments of Central Council and Kootznoowoo, Inc.

The proposed technologies will provide community-based high-speed bandwidth at levels as high as 1.544Mbs downlink/512Kbs uplink for distribution by the Tlingit & Haida ISP. The Community Center site was generously donated by Kootznoowoo, Inc.
