Tlingit Haida Technology Industries Projects Update

Central Council is pleased to announce that Bill Martin, T&H 1st Vice-President, has agreed to help us implement two very important technology projects in the very near future. We will have one with the Department of Defense and the other with the Department of the Interior. Bill has agreed to join our management team beginning immediately. Bill is counting on his wife, Lorraine, joining him up here sometime in the relatively near future. His children are grown and will remain in California.

Bill was recruited to head up these projects because of his extensive work experience in the technology industry. He has been employed at IBM since 1965. His career with IBM has included field work as a Hardware Engineer repairing computer equipment in customer locations. He has also worked with the administrative group involving accounting for and billing of leases and maintenance. Since 1986 he has worked with the Software Support Group in San Jose where he is responsible for diagnosing and repairing system control programs for IBM software products.

Bill was raised in Kake and graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1961. He has a fairly large extended family throughout our Southeastern Alaska region. Although he has lived these many years in California, he is familiar with the lifestyle of the people in the Southeast Region. This familiarity of the area and his work in the computer industry will provide the tools necessary to administer the projects we are currently involved with and other opportunities that we will be pursuing.

Bill is no stranger to our tribal government. He has been a delegate to Central Council Tlingit & Haida General Assembly since 1990 and has served ever since. He has been both Vice President and President of the San Francisco Tlingit & Haida Community Council. He has represented our tribe on the Intertribal Trust Fund Monitoring Association since 1997.

In the DOD project we will be subcontracting with the Intertribal Information Technology Corporation to help convert existing architectural drawings into digitized images in the computer. We are part of a national program to stimulate employment under these contracts for economically depressed, rural areas. We will be doing everything possible to have a pilot project in one of our communities in a couple of months.

We are excited that these projects will not only help us provide jobs in our region but it will also assist us in making the transition from a "paper world" to an "electronic world" in project management.
