FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 2, 2003
Central Council Tlingit and Haida Loses its VPSO Program
Manager
Robin
Lown, Central Council's VPSO Program Manager is moving on to other things.
He plans to relocate to Bethel, Alaska in August after he finishes the
training that will lead to the securing of his commercial and instrument
flying license. As a kid Robin became interested in flying and he is a
licensed pilot for both airplane and helicopters and hopes to start a
new career in this field.
Since coming to work for Central Council Robin has managed the Village
Public Safety Officer Program, which was quite challenging; he also started
and ran the employee drug testing program;
managed the building maintenance and parking and served as the building
security. Robin served on the Personnel Committee and the Building Space
Committee.
Robin has attended and been the Sergeant At Arms at every General Assembly
since being employed at Central Council. For the past 6 years he has been
the MC at the Central Council's Christmas Party and several times at their
staff picnic. He's participated on both the Christmas Party and Picnic
committees both for planning and fund raising. He's done any number of
other things during his tenure at the Central Council. He has always tried
to be a resource to solve problems and get things done.
"I am sorry to see Robin leave," said President Edward Thomas.
"He is a team player and has always willingly stepped up to the plate
to help out wherever he can. He has effectively used his many years of
administrative experience in improving the way we do business in the service
of our people."
Robin was born in Juneau, Alaska, and lived here until he was 8 years
old; he then relocated to California. He returned to Juneau at the age
of 17 and graduated from the Juneau-Douglas High School.
He is married to Jody who has worked for the State of Alaska, Department
of Law for the last 27 years. They have 5 children, 4 daughters and 1
son (all grown); two are married, but no grandchildren yet (he's too young
for that!). All but one of his children live in the lower 48, his middle
daughter lives here in Juneau and works for the Juneau Police Department
as a police/fire/EMS dispatcher.
Robin joined the Army at the age of 18 and served 3 years including 1
year in Viet Nam as a helicopter crew chief/door gunner. After serving
in the Army he returned to Juneau and went to work for the State Department
of Public Safety as a radio dispatcher. He liked this job, and began his
career as an Alaska State Trooper. After 23 ½ years with the troopers,
Robin retired. At the time of his retirement he was the Detachment Commander
for Southeast and held the rank of Lieutenant.
Immediately after retiring from the State (August 28, 1995), Robin was
hired by Central Council as the VPSO Program Manager. He had worked with
the VPSO program as a trooper and was experienced in supervision of law
enforcement personnel. He felt this would be an interesting place to work
and believed he would do a good job.
"The old adage of walking a mile in anothers
shoes (or moccasins) is so true. As a trooper I did not have the understanding
and appreciation of the job VPSOs perform. Having been on the VPSO side
for 8 years, I have come to appreciate them. I also have a great respect
for the Native people gained through my many years at the Central Council."
- Robin Lown
Locally
Robin's been involved with the Juneau Lions Club - Gold Medal Tournament
for many years. He's served as President of the Lions Club, and Co-chair
of the Gold Medal Tournament. He is also a life member of the Alaska Peace
Officers Association and the Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police.
Central Council appreciates the years of dedication and service that Robin
has provided. Please join us in wishing him all the best in succeeding
with obtaining his commercial and instrument license and beginning a new
chapter in his life.
