EDA Programs Set to End After FY2008
Support for EDA Reauthorization Requested
The Business & Economic Department of Central Council Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska requests your input on the Reauthorization of Economic Development Administration (EDA) programs of the U.S. Department of Commerce by the U.S. Congress. These programs, last authorized on October 27, 2004 by President Bush, are set to expire after fiscal year 2008. Reauthorization of economic development assistance programs is needed to continue funding of projects throughout Southeast Alaska and the United States.
The EDA was established under the Public Works and Economic Development Act of 1965 (PWEDA) to generate private sector jobs, retain existing jobs, and stimulate commercial growth in the United States. Assistance from EDA is targeted toward communities that have high unemployment, low income, or other severe economic distress. Projects supported and funded through the Agency are to aid in the creation of sustainable private sector jobs and the creation of a community economic environment that will support those jobs.
We are asking that those Tribes and communities in the Southeast who have projects and programs funded by EDA and its programs to submit their comments. Please include in your correspondence success stories made possible by EDA support and funding, or concerns that you have about EDA programs. The continuation of funding and support from EDA to our communities is at stake.
Email letters can be sent directly to EDAReauthorization@eda.doc.gov. Please copy our department in your letters to EDA as we would like to hear your input as well: swade@ccthita.org.
