HARVEY B. MARVIN HONORED AS TLINGIT HAIDA CENTRAL COUNCIL DELEGATE/CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Delegate/Citizen of the Year Tlingit Haida Central Council Delegate/Citizen of the Year, Harvey B. Marvin, was honoredMonday, November 14, 2005 at a luncheon in the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall in Juneau, Alaska.

President Edward K. Thomas, 1st Vice President Fred Lauth, 3rd Vice President Eli Hanlon, 4th Vice President Millie Stevens, and 6th Vice President Michele Metz were all in attendance to present the awards to Harvey.

Harvey is Eagle/Kaagwaantaan of the Box House; he is T’ak Dein Taan Yadi, grandchild of the Chookaneidi.

Throughout his lifetime, Harvey has shown extreme dedication to the Native Alaskan community. He was a member of the Tlingit Haida Central Council Executive Committee and one of the five members of the Lobby Team for the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.

He served on the original Huna Totem Board and is credited with helping to form the present Huna Totem Corporation. He was elected to consecutive terms as director of the Huna Totem Corporation from 1976 to 1994 and served as treasurer before that.

Harvey is very committed to public service and has made many efforts to better his community. While living in Sitka he was elected to the Charter Commission, which drafted the Unification Charter for the City and Borough of Sitka, he also served on the Sitka Assembly. Harvey is a Korean War-era Marine Corps Veteran.

Besides his commitment to his community and culture, Harvey is a dedicated husband and father. He and Lillian have been married for over 50 years and have had six children and eight grandchildren.
