Environmental - 2010 Tribal Leaders Summit

"Working to Protect our Resources for Future Generations"

The Central Council Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (Central Council), in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), hosted the EPA Region 10 Tribal Leaders Summit, August 30 through September 3, 2010. President Edward K. Thomas and Region 10 Administrator Dennis McLerran welcomed over 400 Region 10 tribal leaders, EPA executives, and tribal environmental staff from Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

Participants gathered to discuss tribal environmental policy, concerns, and issues. During a two-day action planning session, tribal leaders, EPA, Department of the Interior, and United States Geological Survey executives addressed Climate Change in Region 10. During the strategic planning session, participants identified education, elevating tribal leadership, interagency tribal coordination, outreach and communication, funding and research, equitable funding, consultation, regulation, policy development and management as inter-agency and tribal visions for action in the next twelve months.

Break-out sessions included topics on climate change, grants management, mining, environmental justice, disadvantaged business enterprises, native cultures of marine resources, paralytic shellfish poisoning, energy efficiency, air and water quality, youth environmental programs, brownsfields assessments and remediation, and tribal consultation.

This year’s theme was “Working to Protect Our Resources for Future Generations” and was dedicated to Carol Paddock Jorgenson, past Director of the EPA’s American Indian Environmental Office. A recognition and awards dinner was held in her honor and the recipients of the Carol Paddock Jorgensen environmental awards are as follows: Maka Monture, Environmental Youth Leadership; Elaine Abraham and Susan Flensburg, Environmental Leadership; Confederated Tribes of Umatilla and Nelson Island Consortia, Environmental Tribal Community; and Nez Perce and Samish tribes, Environmental Interagency Collaboration.
