Child Welfare

The ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act) Program provides case management services to children and parents or guardians in communities served.

The program’s mission is to ensure that the Tribe’s interest in children is protected if removal of an Indian child from their home by the State of Alaska Office of Children’s Services, becomes necessary. Minimum federal standards established by ICWA require state courts comply when an Alaska Native child is taken into state custody.

The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) is federal law which protects and maintains the integrity and rights of Alaska Native children, their families or custodians and tribes in involuntary custody proceedings.

ICWA applies to Indian children under the age of 19. ICWA applies to involuntary custody proceedings and does not apply to custody disputes between parents.
