The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska developed a model legal system that reflects traditional authority and laws in order to best serve the jurisdictional and socio-economic needs of the Communities. CCTHITA recognizes that our children are our most vital resource for the continued existence and integrity of the Tribes and we are therefore compelled to promote and maintain the health and well-being of all of our children.

To achieve some of these goals, much energy and resources have been devoted to the development of a Child Support Program and to strengthening the Tribal Court infrastructure in order to provide judicial services to Tribal member families in need of emotional and economic support for their children.

The Judiciary Committee and Tribal Court System was created to foster and protect the tribe's inherent and sovereign rights to resolve issues and disputes of and among Tribal members, including their families and children. The Tribal Court was initially established its constitution with the election of Judges by the General Assembly. Authority and responsibilities have been conveyed to the Tribe’s Judicial System with the passage of Title 6. The Committee serves as the General Assembly's liaison to the Tribal Court System, which derives its authority from Article XI of the Tribe's Constitution.
