The State of Alaska, Department of Public Safety eliminated funding for the Tlingit and Haida Central Council Village Public Safety Officer Program as of June 30, 2003. This is a result of budget cuts ordered by Governor Murkowski. The Alaska Federation of Natives has agreed to provide funding to continue VPSO services for an interim period to determine if alternative funding can be obtained to continue the program. The State of Alaska Department of Public Safety has agreed to fund police liability insurance for the Central Council VPSO program through December 31, 2003. They have also agreed to continue to provide oversight, training, and support to the VPSO program.
All communities that currently have VPSOs are being requested to actively look for alternative funding to continue the VPSO program or find other ways to provide public safety services to their citizens.
