Family Violence Prevention and Services Grant

Program Purpose
To provide shelter for victims of domestic violence from rural communities. It also provides training to Village Public Safety Officers and persons who provide care and counseling for victims in rural communities.

Program Description
Funds from this grant program are paid to women's shelters in Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan to defray transportation expenses to shelters, and to provide services (such as lodging and counseling) for victims of domestic violence from rural communities. Funds are also used to provide formal training to rural care providers and law enforcement personnel in dealing with domestic violence. Southeast Alaska regions are served accordingly: Juneau: Aiding Woman in Abuse and Rape Emergencies (AWARE) serves the rural communities in northern southeast Alaska including Hoonah, Yakutat, Pelican, Elfin Cove, Gustavus, and Excursion Inlet. In Ketchikan: Woman in Safe Homes (WISH) serves the rural communities in southern southeast Alaska including Hydaburg, Craig, Klawock, Thorne Bay, Kasaan, and Metlakatla. And in Sitka: Sitkans Against Family Violence (SAFV) serves central southeast Alaska including Kake and Angoon.
