Vocational Training & Resource Center
The Vocational
Training and Resource Center (VTRC) is a Tribal Enterprise
of the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska.
The Center was conceptualized under the Tribe's Overall Economic
Development Plan (OEDP) as a strategic program to provide means
for our Tribal membership to attain local jobs and develop Native-owned
businesses. The creation of the VTRC was based primarily on the
consequences of the Welfare Reform Acts, and as a way to defray
some of the changes that would and have become inevitable. As a
business enterprise the center is open to the public. VTRC's primary
goal is the empowerment of Native Tribal members.
The VTRC is a post-secondary institution that provides hands-on instruction methods that prepare students for sustainable self-sufficient employment or entrepreneurship. All classes are open to the public. Please call the VTRC at (907) 463-7375 for your specific training needs.
Courses are designed to be:
- Skill based
- Specific to occupational skill requirements
- Adapted to the regional business environment
Council staff teach courses covering computer use and many software packages, as well as non-computer courses, including cooking, commercial driver's license, and small business management.
All training sessions focus on development of strong work ethics, teamwork, self-management, and self-confidence. The center's programs are designed to be short-term and intense. This intense approach provides an immediate opportunity for students to apply skills to their jobs, as well as sustain a concentrated time period for learning.
In conjunction with the vocational training programs at the Center, the VTRC also houses the Johnson O'Malley (JOM) program (a federally funded program to provide supplemental education for Alaska Native Students), a child care center, the higher education program, and the Paul G. Allen Library.
Mission
" Based upon the economic development and employment needs that exist within the region, the Vocational Training & Resource Center (VTRC) will provide opportunities for training and career advancement through high quality, post-secondary academic and vocational education."
